steambound pachyderm

Nantes, France, sure knows how to pay homage to the mind of fellow countryman Jules Verne with this steampunk creation: a magnificent 12 meter high by 8 meter wide mechanical elephant made from 45 tons of reclaimed materials such as wood and steel:

The best part is that this fully functional robot is able to carry 49 passengers on a 45 minute trip through l'Ile de Nantes.  They can watch the city pass by atop a terrace and several side balconies, or watch the beast's gears in motion within a lounge in its interior.

For more information visit Les Machines de L'Ile, the homepage of the art project responsible for this elephantine project and other mechanical creations in Nantes.
